new babies

for the first time since my teenaged boys were little, i have a bottle of amoxycillin in my fridge - my kittens have colds. we adopted allie cat and katie kitty about a month ago, and got a couple of quick, and expensive, reminders about having pets. allie's spay left her with a hernia that needed to be repaired, they both had respiratory infections, and katie had a little problem with a parasite. about 500 bucks later, they're both rarin' to go and I can't imagine how we've gone this long without a cat in the house. (samantha died two years ago at the age of 17) i've never had two cats and it's an absolute blast! they aren't from the same litter, but they were in 'foster care' together, and we thought it would be nice to keep the girls together. they play together, eat together, sleep together, and wrestle together. then they go to their separate corners. until they're ready to be together. there's a LOT of together. when they're all curled up and twined around each other they're so cute it's criminal. since i thought they were so inseparable it was a giant shock the day allie came back from a two-day stay at the vet. katie hissed and spat and growled like she was going to tear allie's throat out! because cats recognize each other through scent, the vet said katie had no idea who allie was anymore! the vet recommended rubbing them both down with vanilla so that they would smell like each other....took about a day and a-half and they were back to normal. lesson learned, i will never take one to the vet without the other. who knew?
